Hillside of Christmas Ferns (Polystichum acrotichoides). These ferns remain green throughout the winter and were often used by early settlers as holiday decorations. The Christmas fern’s habit of eventually “lying down” helps hold leaves in place, thus aiding erosion control and soil formation.
